Big Dune, Amargosa Valley, is an area that covers about five square miles of sand dunes. Its centerpiece tops out at 500 feet. These hills are about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, and about 29 miles south of Beatty. These dunes are a well-kept secret and mostly used by locals. On weekends plenty of outsiders can show up to ply the dunes with their dune buggies.
Big Dune is home to the Big Dune Beetle and three other sensitive beetle species. The BLM has posted signs identifying protected areas, so please respect these areas.
